Holidays in review

Christmas was good. Went to see M’s grandmother on Tuesday. Her parents and a couple cousins and other friends dropped by. My mom also came down (she lives further North so it is a good halfway meeting point) so that was good to see her too. Drove back really late Tuesday night, stopping by to see J and A, finally getting home at 1:30. Went to bed about 2:00.

Wednesday, got up and went to see my grandparents. This was only a 35 minute drive so that was good.

Today we did a little shopping, nothing serious, Petco and Storables (the plastic storage container store). REI didn’t have the Rockports that M wanted so we just cashed out our REI bucks and went home.

I have sent off our holiday contribution to charity. This year we gave $1000 to Humane Society of Santa Clara. This will be the second year we have done this, and I still like it a bit better than holiday gift-giving… I would rather give to charity than to spend the same amount on an average $50 gift for 20 people. So if we didn’t give you any gifts this year, now you know why… and we are not expecting any either. However, we did actually get our sh!t together this year and send out cards…

Thanks to all who responded to the “what should I write about” poll. I will collate all the submissions carefully, and will then proceed to write about precisely whatever I want. But it is always nice to know that people are reading… thank you.

going down to southpark

Spent some time with the southpark character maker which looks like it has improved a bit since the first time I played with it.

Revised userpics are here (added three). The 100×100 userpic size doesn’t show the full detail but the larger image is here on my server. I managed to make two of the t-shirts readable, the third one was just hopeless at the 100×100 size, so it remains a blur… but hopefully my homies will know what it’s supposed to say when they see it.

Is the Friendsfriends page useful at all?

The Friends’ Friends page is an interesting way to waste time reading posts from random people you probably don’t know. (The link here is for my friends’ friends, but you can substitute your own name I think. Might work for paid members and not others, I’m not sure.

The problem with this feature is that if you have any communities at all in your friends list, those community members show up as “your friends’ friends”. Bah, this is next to useless, because I have bookmarked groups with huge numbers of users like paidmembers, polyamory, etc. Even if I wanted to temporarily remove those communities from my friends list and enjoy the friendsfriends for a while, now I’m stuck reading community entries (because my friends have bookmarked those communities as well). I don’t think the filter feature works with friendsfriends at all.

polyamory’s friends has like 600+ today.
paidmembers’ Friends has like 1000 or more from Saturday and it’s not even Saturday here yet.

So I have come to the conclusion that the best way to see if your friends have any interesting friends is to go look at their friends pages individually.
