List etiquitte

Dude, someone just insulted me on SPAM-L. Apparently insults are thrown around like candy on Halloween but someone posting an idea that is similar to something mentioned before (or even similar to a web site mentioned before) is heinous and they should be dealt with harshly. That seems backwards. Anyway I wrote privately to the guy and said “Sorry if I am misinformed or naive but I don’t think that justifies an insult.” I wonder what he might say.

Kill das spammers

In my ongoing campaign of… well, not really evil, more like “civil disobedience”… Day 1. Found 18 subnets/24 that were already sending us >100 bounces per day. Using iptables I arranged to give them “connection refused” for all connection attempts. No changes to sendmail.cf yet. Day 2. Switched sendmail.cf to detect bounces (meaning MAIL FROM: ) and respond with 454 instead of 550. These are all guaranteed-forged domains so there’s no such thing as “legitimate” bounces. Also blocked another 16 ip/24 ranges found to be sending >100 bounces per day. ...

Go Wil

I just added Wil Wheaton ( wilwheaton) to my friends page, and the first thing I saw after that was this: there and back again in which he writes: Dear Mr. Jackson, Please let me be part of “The Hobbit.” Please. Please. Please. Please. I will totally be your best friend. Sincerely, Wil Wheaton PS- Please please please please. Thank you. How can I improve on that?

I applied for another job

I applied for another job at Y. Seriously, I was about to give up on them, but this job posting appeared right when I got back from my trip (on my day off, actually). Job description and my cover letter below… Wish me luck!

vonage?

Do any of you (or anyone you know) use vonage.com, or other voice over ip service? I am thinking about getting a voip line to use for long distance but I want to know the quality of the service (the line quality and the customer service, both)

Weekend report -- Seattle trip and wedding

OK, setting aside the uncomfortable flight back, I have to say that I am very glad to have gone to see torquemada and 9thmoon get hitched. Thursday: I decided to get a suit, because in addition to appearing in a wedding party, I also will be going to some interviews in the near future, and besides, I haven’t bought dressy clothes for myself in a long time. So, after work I hie myself to Men’s Wearhouse, where I get measured and proceed to buy 10 things I needed and probably 5 things I didn’t really, but they were nice. The suit needs taking in here and there, so it stays and the rest is bundled into the trunk. ...
